I was out in the yard until late last night watering and was seriously sweating. How could I be so hot at 9:30 at night? I came inside and checked the temperature and it was still 99 degrees! That is crazy to me that it can be that hot at night. The concrete still radiates heat, the house still radiates heat. The pets don't even want to go outside and today I think I'm going to take a cue from them and stay in.
I just hope that we don't lose power this week!!
I have GOT to get my driver's license renewed today. It expired a month ago. Yikes. I don't know at what point they would make me start over but I'm sure I don't want to do that!
Back when I had my ankle surgery I started a list of things I was going to cook and blog about when I got better. I found my list last night and it had just about everything checked off. So I suppose it's time to get some more ideas going. I'm open for suggestions. Even if it's something I don't know how to do- I'm willing to try! Want to know how to smoke food? Or barbeque? I can do it. Want to know how to stuff quail? (yikes! Not sure about that.) How about stuffing a chicken breast or a pork chop!??
I love short cut recipes but sometimes I really love the cooking process and like to try recipes that are more involved. I mean... I've definitely got the time to do it! With my kids both in college.
It's been hot and going to get BLAZING hot this week. The temps are close to 110. About the only thing I'm going to be making this week is iced tea! What kind of meals does one make when it's that hot?
I'm trying really hard to keep everything in my yard alive right now. I was out watering yesterday and noticed I have black wasps on my basil. I had to move the pots off of my deck because it was covered with them and the puppies kept trying to bite at them. I noticed that it almost looks like a cross between a wasp and a bee. I told my husband it was a wasp bee. But turns out I don't know much. I looked it up last night and it's actually called a scoliid wasp. And it's a beneficial insect to gardeners because it eats Japanese Beetle larvae. Yuck!
There. Now we know!
Well, it's time for me to get going and be productive! Have a happy day folks!!!
I haven't been on here for a while. I feel like I've been in a deep sleep all spring and summer. ACTUALLY.. I have! I went to the doctor a couple of weeks ago for a regular check up but mentioned my deep love of sleep, my weight gain, etc.. and the doctor decided to check me out. Turns out I'm hypothyroid and not just lazy. I have mixed feelings about getting cured. I am excited about returning to my normal energy level and cooking and actually getting things done. But on the other hand I've never felt so rested! So other than sleep what have I done since April??? Let's think....
Not much! We haven't been anywhere really for vacation but decided in the spring that since we were staying home this summer we would have a "stay-cation" and enjoy having company come up. Our goal was to have some friends come up that hadn't been here before and show them our lake.
Around Easter we went to a gorgeous wedding in Hot Springs, Arkansas. One of my best friends in high school had an older daughter get married and we went to their wedding and had a blast meeting their friends. We also arranged a time for them to come up to our house! So shortly after our Memorial day we hosted the Parnell family. It was their first trip to NE Oklahoma and our husbands got in some great bonding time. I love it when that happens.
I was spoiled because my friend Tamara likes to cook so she took over my kitchen a time or two and I got to sit back and enjoy her cooking! And of course I love getting to spend time with my friends kids. Her daughters are in their twenties now and are such wonderful sweet people. I just love them.
Later in June we had friends come over to celebrate my birthday in low key lake fashion. We sat around (and in) the pool, had cocktails, and cruises up the lake. I was spoiled rotten with fabulous gifts. And since my birthday is also my anniversary I was given tickets to go see James Taylor in concert. To see James Taylor has been one of my "bucket list" items for years. I'd have to wait a few weeks to enjoy that. In fact we went just last week and he was amazing. Like my girlfriend said, he had a voice like liquid gold. I cried through the first several songs. It was embarrassing!
In late June had family that came in that had never been to this house. Joe's little sister had moved after college to Minnesota and gotten married. Then later, they moved to Idaho. And once settled they started their family. Time had a way of slipping by you know... and we were all ashamed of the fact that sooooo much time had gone by. We got to meet our niece and nephew on their whirl wind trip through the south and we were just swept off our feet. It was so wonderful to watch this kid sister be the coolest mom in the world and watch her little mini me's running around. I'd made up my mind that I was going to spoil them rotten and in spite of their mother's request for healthy food I managed to get some yummy non-healthy stuff in! By gosh, those kids were going to remember Aunt Trish and Uncle Joe!!! Of course, you can't really miss what you don't know. And now that we know them we miss them terribly!! I want them to hurry back. There is a logistics issue.. Idaho- Oklahoma. Not remotely close. :(
My husband's mother is such a trail blazer. I so admire her independence. She's never been afraid of taking off and traveling by herself and on her trip to the south this summer she bought a conversion van (slash) camper. And made stops here and there all across the U.S. on her way back home, and stopped here to plug in and stay for a night or two. She loved showing off her new toy.
We also had company in for the Fourth of July. Fourteen of us boated up the lake for our annual Duck Creek celebration, including my best friend's mother. Betty had never been to our house. As a matter-of-fact I hadn't seen Betty since it was 1970 something!!! She had fun here watching all the kids and watching her daughter and I act like kids, as we usually do whenever we're together. We had a perfect mix of company of all ages. Teenagers, college kids, and our friends. We watched an amazing display, had great food, and danced the night away. We boated home and got here around 2 am but the night could have gone on for a long time. It was a blast for all of us!
We had more company after that.... My husband's best friend from his college years came up with his friend and companion Carrie. Bert is one of the people who introduced my husband and me back in 1988~ so he will always be a special person that I love very much! He's one of those friends that we had lost contact with for years but then when we met back up it's as if no time at all had passed. Friendship and conversation just never missed a beat. The same love and respect was there. And because he and Carrie had been family friends when they were growing up she became our instant friend! She was such a lovely person to spend time with.
I've said many times this has been the best summer ever. At least the parts I was awake for! We were going to eat dinner last night because it was the night before our daughter was leaving to go back to college. We were talking about how special this summer has been. Partly because of our stay-cation. And 100% because of the friends we spent our time with this summer. Some day, I'll tell you the story of how I met my daughter's boyfriend. It's a good story! And I love to put him on the spot and tease him. We missed him last night as we were making Amy tell us about their first kiss. And then we grossed her completely out by telling her about our first kiss. haha... sooooooo much fun!
So that's been our summer in a nutshell. True, it's still July and there is time left but our kids aren't home with us. We'll have to see what we end up doing while they're gone. My husband told me last night "we'll be just fine.." and I believe he's right. :)
Who knows, maybe I can stay awake long enough now to blog.
I'm a wife and mom! That about sums me up! I am blessed to be married to my best friend for 28 years now. I have 2 great kids that are grown! My hobbies include: Cooking, photography, gardening, reading, painting, and pottery, and feathering my nest! I have a project going at all times!
