I walked out front yesterday and I saw a dragonfly on one of my plants. It was pretty big. I ran back in and got my camera.
It was really hard to get his whole body in focus. The leaves would get in the way. I was afraid to try to move them for fear it would fly off. But, as I was staring through my lens I realized that this is one of the strangest bugs I've ever seen. Even more than stick bugs praying mantises, or grass hoppers. This head looked like it was on a swivel. It seemed like he had a big helmet head. I realized he (?) wasn't just perched there he was actually eating my plant. So I ran back in and got my husband so he could see how bizarre this bug was.
The camera sounds seem to get his attention. As my camera was auto focusing he would turn and look at me. He was a big bug!! His body was longer than a finger. So I'm leaned in getting closer and closer and closer......... and you can guess what happened. He buzzed really loud and flew! And it scared the bejesus out of me! I screamed. It's a miracle I didn't drop my camera. Maybe bug photography is not for me.
It got me to thinking though about all the people who love dragonflies and think they are beautiful. Some people even have dragonfly tattoos. I wonder if they could have seen this bug in action if they would still feel that way. It was straight out of an alien movie.
